The Cold Box Process
HAI's leading cold box product line, SigmaCure, utilizes the Phenolic Urethane Cold Box (PUCB) process. The PUCB process utilizes an amine gas to catalyze the reaction between a phenolic resin and an isocyanate resin to produce a urethane bond. No byproducts are produced; therefore curing takes place at the same rate throughout.
An alternative to the conventional PUCB process, HAI's environmentally advantageous cold box product line, BioCure, is a new Low VOC Biodiesel solvent system based on methyl esters of vegetable oils and when used to formulate phenolic urethane resins, shows a reduction in volatile emissions and improved process performance.
HAI's amine catalyst product line, Sigma Cat, is designed for use with our entire line of phenolic urethane cold box resins.
Advantages of the Cold Box Process:
- High Productivity - Large volume high speed production
- No tooling heat required
- Cures at room temperature
- Cost effective to run in comparison to heat cured systems
- Low labor and energy cost
- Good dimensional accuracy
- Cores can be handled immediately
- Cores can be cast almost immediately
- Long resin shelf life
